What Is Spinel?
Spinel is a genuine crystalline gemstone composed ideally of magnesium aluminium oxide (MgAl₂O₄). It crystallises in the cubic crystal system and belongs to the wider spinel structural family — one of mineralogy's most elegant and chemically versatile crystal architectures.
Within every spinel crystal, oxygen atoms form a tightly packed three-dimensional framework containing tetrahedral and octahedral sites occupied by metal ions. Small changes in which elements occupy these positions can dramatically alter how the crystal interacts with light, producing an extraordinary spectrum of colours while preserving the same fundamental crystal structure.
Unlike many coloured gemstones that represent different minerals, red, blue, pink, violet and lavender spinels are all expressions of the same remarkable mineral, their colours controlled by subtle changes in crystal chemistry.

A Crystal Structure Designed for Colour
The general chemical formula of the spinel group is:

In ideal magnesium spinel:
- Magnesium occupies predominantly tetrahedral sites.
- Aluminium occupies octahedral sites.
- Oxygen forms the supporting cubic framework.
This highly ordered crystal lattice is also remarkably adaptable. Different trace elements can substitute into the crystal during growth, modifying how specific wavelengths of light are absorbed while preserving the integrity of the spinel structure.
Mineralogists distinguish between normal spinel and inverse spinel according to how cations are distributed between tetrahedral and octahedral positions. Gem-quality magnesium spinel is principally associated with the normal spinel structure, although natural and laboratory-grown crystals may exhibit varying degrees of cation disorder.
Spinel demonstrates one of mineralogy's fundamental principles: gemstone colour is a consequence of crystal chemistry. The elements incorporated into a crystal—and the crystallographic sites they occupy—determine how light is absorbed, transmitted and reflected, creating the colours we observe.

Because spinel crystallises in the cubic system, it is optically isotropic and normally exhibits single refraction, distinguishing it from corundum (ruby and sapphire), which is optically anisotropic and doubly refractive.

For centuries, fine red spinels were mistaken for rubies. Both gemstones can display vivid chromium-induced red colours, yet scientifically they are entirely different minerals.
